This Week: The Homeric Hymns
The Homeric Hymns are a collection of songs written in ancient Greece between the 7th and 6th cent. BCE. They were performed at festivals to honor the gods and often recount important deeds the gods accomplished.
We’ll be reading the four “major” hymns (2-5) to Demeter, Hermes, Apollo, and Aphrodite, as well as the brief hymn to Dionysus. There are many possible translations to choose from if you want to buy a physical copy. Alternately, the links above offer free online versions.
Come prepared with questions, favorite passages, or just to discuss your favorite Greek gods with likeminded friends. Light refreshments will be served.
