This Week: Apuleius’ The Golden Ass
The Roman Apuleius wrote the Golden Ass (also known as The Metamorphosis) in the 2nd century. It follows the fantastical story of a man who accidentally transforms himself into a donkey. Witches, bandits, love stories both romantic and bawdy, gods and goddesses abound.
We’ll be reading the P. G. Walsh translation (Oxford World Classics edition), though any version will do, including online free versions such as this one. For this week we’ll read books 1-4.
Come prepared with questions, favorite passages, or just to discuss your favorite Roman gods with likeminded friends.
